Summer Concert Series 2014

Klaipėda Concert Hall Summer Concert Series 2014

@ Park Stage

28 June–26 July 2014

From June 28th to July 26th we invite the citizens and visitors of Klaipėda to the events of our Summer Concert Series at the Park Stage of the Klaipėda Concert Hall. Come and join us for six summer weekends at our backyard park and experience the delight of listening to live music in open air, surrounded by the natural greenery. The nature’s elements – the whispering wind, the cool of summer nights, gentle susurration of the park – will spice up a delectable blend of classical and jazz music and add a special ambiance to the summer evenings that you can spend with your families and friends.

The series will open on June 28th with the appearance of the “Romantic Youth Orchestra. Such title seems to describe the symphony orchestra of the National M. K. Čiurlionis School of Arts and the featured works at their best. The orchestra will be led by the vigorous, ingenious and youthful maestro Martynas Staškus. One of the best known works in the programme is the symphonic poem In the Forest by Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis whose tone painting will resonate with the romantic moods of the evening in the surroundings of the park.

“A Deep Blue Caribbean Night” on July 5th will treat the audience to an exquisite string of Latin American songs. A programme that was put together by mezzo-soprano Rita Novikaitė and the Kaunas Piano Trio glistens with the rarest pearls of vocal and instrumental chamber music, which they collected with diligence and discretion from the boundless ocean of music.
Having travelled around the globe with her engagements as an opera singer and soloist, Rita Novikaitė currently shares her life and work between Lithuania and Austria. She will make her first appearance at the Klaipėda Concert Hall together with the recently formed Kaunas Piano Trio. For the delight of the audience they will offer a gourmet selection of pieces, including the more familiar works by Astor Piazzolla and less known compositions by the Cuban composer Ernesto Lecuona.

The festive concert “Trumpets Blow for Lithuania” on July 6th will mark the Lithuania’s Statehood Day and Coronation of King Mindaugas. The Lithuanian Naval Force Military Orchestra under the direction of Pranciškus Memėnas will create a joyful and uplifting atmosphere by performing works by Lithuanian and foreign composers. The energetic playing of the military orchestra will transport us to the glorious past and remind of the celebrations accompanied by the wind orchestras which enjoyed popularity in the interwar years. The historical surroundings of the former Riflemen’s Hall (the present home of the Klaipėda Concert Hall) will intensify this impression.

The New Ideas Chamber Orchestra (also known as NI&Co) will also give its first performance in Klaipėda on July 12th. Under the artistic leadership of composer and conductor Gediminas Gelgotas, the ensemble of string players is distinguished for the original style of performance and repertoire dominated by minimalist compositions. The ensemble’s appearances often feature minimalist choreography thereby creating a unique concept of musical performance. “They are sensitive to vibrato and purity of tone,” said American composer Terry Riley fascinated with the interpretations of NI&Co. In the programme “Visual Music” the ensemble will combine works by Baroque and contemporary composers.

The programme “Jazz under the Linden Trees” (July 19th) will feature an exclusive line-up of Klaipėda-based musicians. Well-know jazz musicians from the harbour city – Raimonda Vaičiūtė (vocals), Eugenijus Jonavičius (guitar), Edmundas Federavičius (drums) and Saulius Šiaučiulis (keyboards) – will perform as a quartet and join a nonet together with the Klaipėda Brass Quintet. Popular jazz tunes and spontaneous improvisations will flow under the linden trees of the park to the generous applause of the summertime audience.

On the last weekend of July Klaipėda will celebrate the traditional Sea Festival. The programme titled “The Mariner’s Saga” offers a colourful final chord to the Summer Concert Series and a tribute to the city’s most important festival. The late night concert on July 26th will feature the Klaipėda Chamber Orchestra, the Cappella’A vocal ensemble and soloist Deividas Norvilas, performing Lithuanian songs composed in the mid-20th century and dedicated to the marine themes (such as The Old Sailor by Eduardas Balsys and The Mariner’s Saga by Benjaminas Gorbulskis). We believe that the audience will join and sing along these and other popular songs all together.

In the event of rain, concerts will take place at the Klaipėda Concert Hall. We wish you memorable summer evenings in the harbour of music and nature!
