Contemporary Music Festival "Music of Changes" 2010

Music of Changes 2010: the sonic energy of today / Programme /

In our journey through time and space we are to meet again at the “Music of Changes” festival. Our hearing has never been as acute, our minds as sharp and our thoughts as vivid and bright as now. We are very much looking forward to receiving the sonic energy of the modern world and sharing it with you. The “Music of Changes” is going relay this energy from September 17th to November 6th this year.

“There is no such thing as silence. …One enters an anechoic chamber… to discover that one hears two sounds of one’s own unintentional making (nerve’s systematic operation, blood’s circulation)… . Until I die there will be sounds. And they will continue following my death. One need not fear about the future of music,” John Cage once said. Five years ago our festival was named after one of his piano pieces, while his ideas continue to challenge our understanding and provoke thinking about music.

“If we turn away from beauty, is there anything else for us?”

When we speak of a modern work of art, we usually describe it as being “interesting,” but we no longer say that it is “beautiful”… It seems as if some people do not think of beauty, ideals as something real anymore. Such concepts seem to be totally absent from their vocabulary. The “Music of Changes”, however, maintains the existence of beautiful, noble, worthwhile and meaningful things in contemporary art. Come to the festival’s events and you will see that this can be true.

“Music, does it communicate anything?”

For an artist creation is a way of communication with the world. Sounds can arguably communicate vibrations of the soul better than words. When these vibrations find response in the listeners’ hearts, one experiences true elation: communion has taken place. The festival’s programme promises quite a few such precious moments.

“If there is any revenue, will it be spent on music?”

More than 95 per cent of the world’s population listen to non-academic music daily… Among the remaining 5 per cent only an infinitesimal portion listens to the music by contemporary composers. But on the other hand, their work is an object of intellectual prestige: interest in this music usually shows broad intellectual purview and extensive learning. “An enlightened society,” according to Susanne Langer, “usually has some means, public or private, to support its artists, because their work is regarded as a spiritual triumph and a claim to greatness for the whole tribe.”

As a matter of fact, you can become part of that tribe for only Lt15 to Lt30 per one ticket and, what’s more, you can even save with a number of available discounts.

“New music: new listening.” (John Cage)

With the sixth edition of the “Music of Changes” festival the Klaipėda Concert Hall opens its seventh concert season. Eight events programmed for this festival will invite you to open up to new experiences and change.

“If music, patterned sound, had no other office than to stimulate and soothe our nerves, pleasing our ears as well-combined foods please our palates, it might be highly popular, but never culturally important.” (Susanne Langer)

Aiming to become an important signpost in the cultural map of our open and modern city, The “Music of Changes” will charge you with the positive energy of contemporary sound. We invite you to try its galvanising effect!
