The Director of the Orchestra Mindaugas Bačkus
Mindaugas Bačkus (b. 1973) started playing cello at the age of five. His formal training began in 1980 at the M.K.Čiurlionis School of Arts with Romanas Armonas. From 1991 to 1998 he studied cello with Prof. Rimantas Armonas at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, from which he obtained BA and MA degrees. Mindaugas Bačkus went on to pursue his post-graduate studies at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester with Prof. Ralph Kirshbaum and Prof. Karine Georgian, receiving his second MA and Professional Performer Diploma in 2001.
From 1998 to 2005 Mindaugas Bačkus was principal cello with the Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra. In 2002-2009 he was a member of the Chordos Quartet. He is also currently pursuing an active career as a soloist and chamber musician. He also plays the baroque cello with various early music ensembles. His solo repertoire spans from works by J. S. Bach to contemporary Lithuanian and foreign composers. As a soloist, member of the Chordos Quartet and with various ensembles, Mindaugas Bačkus has given performances at a number of international festivals including RNCM International Cello Festival (UK), Norfolk Chamber Music Festival (USA), “Klangspuren” (Austria), “MaerzMusik” (Germany), “Ubeat” (Norway, Sweden), aswell in Lithuanian festivals.
In June 2009 Mindaugas Bačkus became the Artistic Director of Klaipėda Chamber Orchestra.
