“Music of Changes” hoists the sail!

The festival “Music of Changes” will hoist the sail to catch the wind of changes, on the 18th of September, 2009. The festival will start the 6th concert season of in Klaipeda Concert Hall. There you will hear both – the best pieces of today’s music and certified pieces of the last century, which have influenced the process of changes.
There will perform just Lithuanian artists and just professional music, differing in stylistics, created by Lithuanian and foreign authors will sound during six concerts and two videoclubs in the festival. / Programme /

There will perform the “updated” Klaipeda Chamber Orchesta in the firs concert of the festival – “Nocturnal dances”, on the 18th of September. The artistic director Mindaugas Bačkus and the orchestra are preparing to play sophisticated scores of two Finnish composers – Kaija Saariaho and Aulis Salinen, and a piece, created by Agirdas Martinaitis – “Death and the Maiden”, which evokes deep sensual empathy. M. Bačkus will play solo Peteris Vasks’ “Book for Cello” and the work of A. Salinen. The orchestra will be conducted by Mindaugas Piečaitis, who also will perform the duo piece by Steve Reich together with M. Bačkus. Mindaugas Piečaitis arrives to Klaipeda from Germany more often and often and brings new fresh ideas.

The works by Bronius Kutavičius have been doing a great influence to the cultural community of Lithuania, before recovery of the independence. On the other hand, the works written by talented author, are still relevant and do not lose the power nowadays.
The chamber choir “Aidija”, led by the conductor Romualdas Gražinis, will perform the oratorios “From the Jatvingian Stone” and “The Magic Circle of Sanskrit” created by B. Kutavičius, in the concert “The Power of Ritual” (on the 23rd of September). There will also sound some national sutartinės which have been inspiring modern Lithuanian composers for years.

The mysterious melodies of “Amberlife Provincial Melody” (on the 25th of September) will be performed by ensemble “Vilniaus Arsenalas”. The concert was named by one of dramatic works of A. Martinaitis. Just Lithuanian music will be performed by the trio comprising of Laima Šulskutė (flute), Rolandas Romoslauskas (viola) and Sergėjus Okruško (piano) in the programme of the concert. You can hear the opuses of Osvaldas Balakauskas, Jurgis Juozapaitis, Feliksas Bajoras, Zita Bružaitė, Dalia Kairaitytė, Vidmantas Bartulis.

Multi-spirit “Tone Ontology” (on the 9th of October) will be held in the form of club-concert and will take place in the first floor foyer of the concert hall. Acoustic and electronic sounds will be mixed together. Academic stylistics will be replaced by modern, up-to-date dance music rhythms. There will perform the piano duo of Rūta and Zbignevas Ibelhauptas and the Lithuanian Flute Quartet (Giedrius Gelgotas, Lina Baublytė, Fausta Drulytė and Vytautas Sriubikis) in the concert. The galaxy of techno sounds will be mastered by DJ After Sound. In the programme: Jonas Tamulionis, Vytautas V. Jurgutis, Linas Rimša, Rimantas Budriūnas, Yen Klark, Peter Eötvös, Gintaras Sodeika, Rytis Mažulis, Osvaldas Balakauskas, Loreta Narvilaitė, Zita Bružaitė and Rytis Mažulis.

The concerto for piano and orchestra “Century Rolls” by famous American composer John Adams will be the main focus of the concert “Century Reflections” (on the 16th of October). As the author said, to create the piece he was inspired by the sounds of mechanical piano. “The characteristic of the concert is fanatic satisfaction with all over-past piano music – whether it is popular or academic music”.
The piece will be played by Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra and pianist Petras Geniušas, and conducted by Juozas Domarkas. The works of three composers linked with Klaipėda - Stasys Vainiūnas, Eduardas Balsys and Osvaldas Balakauskas - will be performed too.

The concert “Eternal Light” (on the 30th of October) will be performed by Klaipeda Chamber Orchestra (artistic director – M. Bačkus) together with Klaipeda choir ”Aukuras” (artistic director – Alfonsas Vildžiūnas) and soloist Nora Petročenko (mezzo-soprano). They will perform the wonderful “Requiem in memoriam Stasys Lozoraitis” by Osvaldas Balakauskas. The concert will be conducted by the composer Vykintas Baltakas, residing in Belgium at the moment, who often participates in the most famous world festivals of modern music.

The videoclubs of the festival will invite you to spend two interesting evenings in the company of colourful composers Mindaugas Urbaitis (on the 30th of September) and Raminta Šerkšnytė (on 14th of October).
