The opening concert of the Klaipėda International Violoncello Academy (KIVA) features internationally acclaimed cello masters alongside the Klaipėda Chamber Orchestra, appearing under the artistic leadership of its artistic director and initiator of the cello rallies in Klaipėda, Mindaugas Bačkus. We are very pleased to announce that three hugely acclaimed cellists – Bruno Cocset (France), Martti Rousi (Finland), and Karine Georgian (United Kingdom) – came back to Klaipėda this year to join the faculty of the KIVA.

An insatiable musician-researcher, atypical cellist, renowned teacher and founder of Les Basses Réunies, Bruno Cocset gives the Baroque cello its own individual voice. One of the leading Finnish string players, Martti Rousifrequently performs with the leading Scandinavian and European orchestras. A pupil of the world celebrated cellist and teacher Mstislav Rostropovich, Karine Georgian won first prize and Gold Medal at the prestigious Tchaikovsky International Competition. She teaches at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester where she also taught Mindaugas Bačkus, among many others. In this concert they will reunite in the performance of Arvydas Malcys’ Concerto grosso for two cellos and string orchestra.

The appearance of Kenta Uno (Austria) will refresh our memories of last year’s Klaipėda International Cello Competition, in which this Japanese cellist won second prize and the Klaipėda Chamber Orchestra Choice Award.

The opening concert will be conducted by Martynas Staškus who gained multifaceted experience, through his work with professional orchestras and young talent. He currently conducts a number of opera and ballet productions at the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre and stands at the helm of the National M. K. Čiurlionis School of Arts Symphony Orchestra.
