The renown of St Christopher Chamber Orchestra of Vilnius Municipality hinges on remarkable stylistic versatility, professionalism and strong artistic vision. These superlative qualities owe much to the Orchestra’s founding artistic director and long-standing conductor, Donatas Katkus. His diverse activities and interests fall between various disciplines and embrace his previous and current work as a violist, musicologist, educator, writer, film actor, and much more. He was the initiator behind the founding of St Christopher Chamber Orchestra and the annual Christopher Summer Festival, which he has been running since the first years of Lithuania’s re-established independence.
A colourful programme to be presented by Prof. Katkus himself, “Music in Space” features unexpected configurations of instruments and beneficial use of the hall’s acoustic virtues. The works to be presented in the programme call for four string quartets or two orchestras, two violins and orchestra, guitar and quartet. This promises a truly sonorous celebration of returning summer whose sonic energy will exhilarate and invigorate every listener.
