Death and the Maiden

Franz Schubert’s Death and the Maiden was originally composed as a short song for voice and piano, bringing together two characters — a frightened maiden and the comforting figure of Death. Several years later, the composer returned to this song in his string quartet, transforming a simple dialogue into one of the most compelling musical narratives of his oeuvre about human fragility, fear, and acceptance.

This programme will be given a distinctive character by South Korean violinist Hyeyoon Park — an internationally acclaimed performer whose interpretations are celebrated for their technical brilliance, sensitivity, and emotional depth.

The atmosphere of Schubert’s work serves as the starting point for a programme in which the Klaipėda Chamber Orchestra, together with H. Park, explores different perspectives on human experience. Karl Amadeus Hartmann’s Concerto funèbre for violin and string orchestra was created in the face of the political upheavals of the 20th century and became an expression of the composer’s inner convictions. The work conveys not only anxiety and drama, but also a profound search for human dignity and hope.

H. Park is among the most distinguished violinists of her generation, performing with leading orchestras and conductors around the world. Her sensitive yet powerful musicianship will reveal the diverse characters of this programme — the depth of Schubert’s Romanticism, the emotional intensity of K. A. Hartmann, and the rich colours of the other works presented.
