We invite you to our New Year’s celebration, “Vivaldi vs. Handel: A Festive Musical Journey”, where we will welcome the year ahead with the joyous music of two Baroque masters. Antonio Vivaldi and George Frideric Handel—prominent creators of the Baroque era—left an indelible mark on the world of music with their distinctive styles and numerous compositions.
The Italian composer Vivaldi is best known for his virtuosic violin concertos and vivid programmatic works, such as The Four Seasons. His music features vibrant, energetic rhythms, innovative harmonies, and striking orchestral textures. Vivaldi’s compositions often reflect the dynamism and expressiveness of Italian Baroque, offering an unforgettable experience.
George Frideric Handel, born in Germany but spending much of his creative life in England, is renowned for his grand oratorios, operas, and instrumental works. Handel’s style is marked by drama, grandeur, and intricate counterpoint. His music blends lyricism with deep structural elegance, creating compositions that are both majestic and intimate. Handel’s operas and orchestral suites showcase his mastery of combining vocal and instrumental elements to produce rich textures and emotionally compelling works.
This evening’s concert will feature lively Vivaldi flute concertos and the energetic Concerto Grosso RV 565, illustrating Vivaldi’s brilliance in crafting compelling compositions that alternate between solo and ensemble episodes. Handel’s works, on the other hand, are imbued with drama and theatricality, presenting intricate musical narratives that highlight the composer’s sharp sense of structure and form. The contrast between these two composers is evident in their techniques, chosen genres, and the cultural contexts in which they created.
Adding to tonight’s splendor are the exceptional voices of mezzo-soprano Renata Dubinskaitė and acclaimed countertenor David Sagastume. The countertenor’s extraordinary range, expressive depth, and vocal flexibility will lend a captivating sound to the works of Handel and Vivaldi. His clear and emotive voice will elevate this festive program to new heights.
The evening’s celebratory atmosphere will also be brought to life by the international early music ensemble Canto Fiorito and its artistic director, the recorder virtuoso Rodrigo Calveyra (Brazil-France).
Welcome the New Year with this vibrant celebration of Baroque music! The flute concertos, the grandeur of Concerto Grosso, and the captivating voices of talented soloists will charm, inspire, and reveal the timeless power and beauty of Vivaldi and Handel’s masterpieces. Here’s to an evening of musical luxury and a year filled with harmony and joy!
