The International Klaipėda Cello Festival and Competition was launched in 2017 at the initiative of Klaipėda Concert Hall and cellist Mindaugas Bačkus. Held every two years, this project brings cellists from around the world to the port city, where performers present distinctive artistic programs during the festival events.
Since 2023, the cello competition has proudly carried the name of world-renowned Lithuanian cellist, educator, and conductor David Geringas. Professional performers from Lithuania and abroad, as well as cello students and young musicians, compete before an internationally prestigious jury. The International David Geringas Cello Competition will take place on May 3–9, 2027.
