The focal point of this programme that relates music and art is the monumental keyboard cycle by Johann Sebastian Bach – Goldberg Variations. In this concert, one of the iconic masterpieces in Western classical music will be performed both on the harpsichord and on the piano. The programme will also feature Henri Marchand’s studies based on the themes from Goldberg Variations. All works will be performed by pianist Violeta Tamašauskaitė-Coutaz  (France) and harpsichordist Balys Vaitkus.

With this programme performers aim to follow the idea of synthesis of the arts proposed by famous Lithuanian artist and composer Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis. He used to assert that painting can be vibrant like music. Variations is the keyword behind this musical and artistic project. Endless variations of graphic and musical patterns reflect the ideas of Čiurlionis, which acquire visible form through the use of modern media.

Paintings by two artists based in Juodkrantė, Jūratė Bučmytė and Albertas Krajinskas, will be shown in video projections and serve as a backdrop to musical works. The series of paintings was created while listening to Bach’s Goldberg Variations and demonstrates the artists’ imaginative reactions to this outstanding work. It also appears to embrace improvisation on the motives found in Čiurlionis’ drawings.
