During Advent we often commemorate those who are no longer with us… The programme of the Klaipėda Chamber Orchestra entitled “In Loving Memory” is a tribute to two Lithuanian composers – Vidmantas Bartulis and Faustas Latėnas – who have passed away this year.
Mindaugas Bačkus, Artistic Director of the Klaipėda Chamber Orchestra and deviser of this programme, recollected: “When I was a kid and began learning music Latėnas and Bartulis were dubbed as the ‘neo-romantics’ whose work balanced between theatre and art music. They made persistent attempts to implement the most surprising artistic ideas that would often startle their audiences, whereas I have always treated them with much respect and admiration for their sincerity, creative hooliganism and emotional depth of their music. Today, when they are no more with us, we wish to stay awhile with their music.”
The programme will also include Latėnas’ Pasodoble, originally written as the film music, where the solo viola part will be performed by the entire viola section.
The Orchestra will also perform two string quartets – Bartulis’ String Quartet No. 1 Oh, darling and Latėnas’ String Quartet No. 2 In Loving Memory that has given the title for this programme. The latter contains fragments that were used in the music for the legendary theatre performance Smile Upon Us, Lord directed by Rimas Tuminas.
Latėnas once said that art is born out of love for God and man, while this particular quartet is “written in loving memory of all good friends who have emigrated from Lithuania; this is music written in loving memory of all happy moments that we have ever experienced; this is music written in loving memory of all beloved who are no longer with us.”
This concert is now held “In Loving Memory” of the composer himself and his late fellow…
