In the programme “Classics Meets Tango” the Klaipėda Chamber Orchestra will meet the trio of renowned Argentine tango performers – singer Analia Selis, pianist and arranger Mariano Castro and virtuoso bandoneonist Omar Massa. We already had the chance to meet this trio during the 2nd International Klaipėda Cello Festival in May 2019 where they presented the project of Ástor Piazzolla’s music as part of the ArgEnTango ensemble. Shortly after this festival, the Klaipėda Chamber Orchestra went on tour to Switzerland where it participated in the Klangantrisch festival in Riggisberg. Especially for this festival the orchestra prepared a programme of tango music in collaboration with Selis, Castro and Massa, which was performed to huge public and critical acclaim. Now this cross-over project travels back to Klaipėda and hopes to win the listeners’ hearts in Klaipėda!
This programme combines well-known tango melodies with less popular tunes and tango-inspired compositions for string orchestra by various composers, but inevitably centers on the work of Ástor Piazzolla. Arguably the single most important figure in the history of Argentine tango, he has elevated this popular music genre into the form of high art. It is thanks to his creativity and virtuosic command of the bandoneon that tango has relocated from ballrooms to the concert halls around the world, which was unthinkable before.
In his arrangements, produced especially for this project, Mariano Castro kept the bandoneon, an instrument popularized by Piazzolla, at the centre of attention. Omar Mass is one of the most acclaimed bandoneon players of his generation. He not only performs, but also composes and arranges music for his instrument. The wonderful voice of Analia Selis and her prepossessing manner of performance contribute a great deal to the overall effect of this music, which captivates and makes a lasting impression.
