Description
The Synaesthesis, a contemporary music ensemble of Vilnius Municipality, is happy to return to the “Music of Changes” Festival and present the programme “Vortex Temporum.” It opens with the composition by Diana Čemerytė who has been living in Germany for the last two decades. In her work, she achieves a subtle combination of inspirations arising from the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and modern means of expression. In the next pieces our attention will be drawn to French music and sonic imagination of composers Sylvain Marty and Régis Campo.

The second half of the concert will engulf listeners in the sounds of Gérard Grisey’s Vortex Temporum, his opus magnum for six musicians composed in 1996. His meditation on sound and time served as a testament, as Grisey died two years later. “To hear Grisey’s music is to have adventures in the stuff of sound that will change your ears for ever,” once wrote The Guardian about one of the most influential 20th-century composers, a pioneer of the Spectralist Movement. Raw and refined at the same time, rigorously structured yet full of savage energy, this work in three movements is meditation of sound and time formats whose original, hardly recognisable motif is borrowed from Maurice Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé.

Having secured the guardianship and funding of the Vilnius Municipality, the team of young and ambitious musicians, known as the Synaesthesis Ensemble, has taken up the mission of introducing works of experimental Lithuanian and foreign composers to the performance venues. Their professionalism, openness to various forms of artistic synthesis, sincerity, with which they perform both experimental and more mainstream classical contemporary pieces have always attracted and captivated their listeners ever since the foundation of this ensemble. The audience in Klaipėda has already had an opportunity to get ascertained of this during their first performance at the Klaipėda Concert Hall a few years ago.
