Description

Described by Daniel Barenboim as “a highly gifted pianist and musician,” Gabrielius Alekna has garnered fourteen top prizes in competitions on both sides of the Atlantic. He was educated at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre in Vilnius and the Juilliard School in New York, where he studied with Jerome Lowenthal. He became the first Lithuanian to earn a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Juilliard School, in 2006.

The music by Lithuanian composers holds a significant place in the professional work of this pianist. He is passionately interested in the piano music by Vytautas Bacevičius whose work he has extensively researched, recorded and widely performed. Another important figure in his active repertoire is Viennese classic Ludwig van Beethoven. Years ago he was named laureate of the Beethoven International Piano Competition in Vienna.

This programme was prepared in collaboration with Caroline Stinson, a Canadian cellist currently living in New York. It is framed by some of Beethoven’s most remarkable and typical works for cello and piano, also containing elegant concert pieces for cello and piano written by Anton Webern in his characteristically succinct musical language and a couple of contemporary works. Among these is the world premiere of the new piece by New-York-based Lithuanian composer Žibuoklė Martinaitytė entitled ...and under every deep a lower deep opens…, which was composed at the request of Alekna.
