Baroque music at the Dresden court

Friedrich August I, the Elector of Saxony, ascended to power in 1694, marking the starting point for a completely new era of Dresden’s music life. As soon as he became the crowned King, he remodelled entirely the Hofkapelle, where the musicians were mostly specialised in one single instrument (rather unusual at that time), which made the standard of musicianship exceptionally high. An Italian opera company was formed with the finest Italian singers, such as the castrato Francesco Bernardi and the soprano Faustina Bordoni, the wife of Johann Adolf Hasse.

It’s important to point that during the first half of the 18th century, the Electors of Saxony were as well the Kings of Poland and Grand Dukes of Lithuania.

Many composers and musicians were attracted to Dresden from all over Europe, creating the “mixed or German Style”, with influences from France, Italy, Poland, Bohemia and the new “Gallant Style”. Among the Kapellmeisters and composers who were inspired by this virtuosic ensemble were Johann Adolf Hasse, Antonio Lotti, Georg Philipp Telemann and Nicola Porpora.

This program presents emblematic virtuosic pieces of this mixed and rich style, bringing back to life the fascinating atmosphere at the Dresden court of the late baroque period.
