Traveling Sound

The Munich-based ensemble der/gelbe/klang is one of the most active young-generation contemporary music ensembles in Germany, exploring new forms of concert experience and possibilities for expressing today’s music. Founded in 2020, the ensemble quickly became an important presence on the contemporary music scene, collaborating with composers from different generations and creating unconventional musical formats. The ensemble has performed at international festivals in Germany, France, Austria, Switzerland, and other countries, and has produced recordings for Bavarian Radio, the labels NEOS and Kairos, as well as ZDF/ARTE. The ensemble has collaborated with conductors including Vladimir Jurowski, Emilio Pomàrico, Pierre-André Valade, and Vimbayi Kaziboni, and in 2021 received the Bavarian Art Prize.

As part of the Permainų Muzika Festival programme, der/gelbe/klang presents the concert Travelling Sound, centred on the work of Italian composer and conductor Valerio Sannicandro. Having explored space as an independent musical parameter, Sannicandro’s works raise questions not only about what is heard, but also where, how, and along which paths sound reaches the listener.

In the composition ITER-RETI, a six-instrument ensemble and live sound projection expand the traditional concert experience. The musical action is distributed across two spaces: in one, a piano is surrounded by loudspeakers; in the other, the remaining instruments perform. Their sounds travel between the spaces, transforming into echoes, resonances, and distant sonic shadows.

In Reticulatum, this spatial concept is concentrated within a single location. The instruments create a dense network of sounds in which subtle changes of timbre, vibrations, and barely perceptible acoustic details become essential elements of the experience.

Travelling Sound invites audiences to experience music not as a one-way path from the stage to the listener, but as a constantly moving sonic space in which every sound follows its own trajectory.
