Duo Ruut: Estonian electronica

The Estonian duo Duo Ruut – Ann-Lisett Rebane and Katariina Kivi – presents a unique creative model within the musical landscape of the Baltic region, built on a single instrument and two voices. The performers compose and improvise while playing one Estonian zither, which becomes both the melodic and rhythmic foundation: it resonates in a traditional manner as well as a percussive object, producing a distinctive, multilayered timbre.

The duo’s aesthetic combines Estonian folk texts and melodic formulas with elements of modern electronics, a minimalist texture, and clear dramaturgical logic. Although their musical language is restrained, it is marked by highly concentrated expression — an earthy, hypnotic instrumental pulse and subtly calibrated vocal vibrations that create an intimate sonic atmosphere, yet one that expands effortlessly in a concert space. The program will feature a blend of Estonian folklore and original compositions — a new generation’s perspective on tradition, demonstrating how minimal means can give rise to a richly dimensional sonic world.
