One of the most remarkable masterpieces of Romantic music, Franz Schubert’s song cycle “Winterreise” (Winter Journey), will be performed at the Klaipėda train station on one of the longest evenings of the year, welcoming and bidding farewell to modern-day travelers. Created in 1827, this 24-song cycle based on the poetry of Wilhelm Müller is considered a classic of the genre. Composed during Schubert’s illness—he passed away in 1828—the music is imbued with a sense of wintry melancholy, longing for spring, and an awareness of solitude.
Norwegian baritone Steinar Skjervold, who resides in Lithuania, will perform the cycle with the Klaipėda Chamber Orchestra. Skjervold’s repertoire spans from church music and opera to contemporary works, but he particularly focuses on the Lied genre, or German art songs.
