During the International Klaipėda Cello Festival, the urban space Hofas, a courtyard beloved by Klaipėda’s citizens, will become a mystical festival club! Every evening we invite you to end the day with a cello experience with Klaipėda Cello Quartet and guest stars. On the first night, the club space will be filled with the hypnotic rhythms by the world star Matthias Bartolomey and Klaipėda Cello Quartet. Let’s celebrate the cello together!
Klaipėda Cello Quartet will perform with Matthias Bartolomey, a cellist from Austria whose range of creativity is particularly diverse. A graduate of the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna and the Mozarteum in Salzburg, he plays both classical music and jazz. He has attended masterclasses with the great cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, the renowned conductor Mariss Jansons and jazz legend Bobby McFerrin.
He has performed with Vienna State Opera and Vienna Philharmonic Orchestras as well as the European and Mahler Chamber Orchestras. In 2010, Nikolaus Harnoncourt invited him to join his renowned Concentus Musicus Wien. In 2012, he formed BartolomeyBittmann duo with violinist Klemens Bittmann, with whom he has successfully performed throughout Europe. Matthias Bartolomey founded a classical duo with pianist Clemens Zeilinger; with violinists Florian Willeitner and Johannes Dickbauer, and with double bassist Georg Breinschmid he founded the quartet Strings & Bass. Matthias Bartolomey plays a cello which was made in Rome by David Tecchler in 1727.
