Á. Piazzolla, E. Rovira
Ástor Piazzolla (1921–1992) and Eduardo Rovira (1925–1980) were two pioneers of avant-garde tango, often said to have competed for dominance in the genre. This rivalry inspired the ensemble Sonico to explore the birth of contemporary tango through their program. The performance combines the repertoire of two pivotal ensembles in the history of modern tango, both founded in 1956: Piazzolla’s Octeto Buenos Aires and Rovira’s Octeto La Plata—the “creative laboratories” where these renowned bandoneon masters pushed the boundaries of tango.
The programme is particularly unique because it features Piazzolla’s works whose original scores he had burned, surviving only in recorded form, as well as Rovira’s compositions, whose original manuscripts were lost or damaged in a flood. Additionally, four previously unreleased pieces will be performed for the first time.
