Viola duo

Have you ever heard two violas on stage – without any harmonic support, without an orchestra, without a piano? A viola duo is a unique phenomenon in chamber music, rarely encountered in concert halls or in the repertoire. Violists Dovilė Juozapaitienė and Jurgis Juozapaitis, masters and educators of the Lithuanian music scene, laureates of international competitions, and active promoters of chamber music, present this exceptional format.

They offer a program that showcases the full spectrum of the instrument’s character: from Baroque grandeur to expressive experimentation of the 20th–21st centuries. The program includes L. Tertis’ virtuosic variations on a Handel theme, the elegant duet by A. Rolla, the emotional “Dejonė” by F. Bridge, contemporary energy and technical daring in G. Knox’s cycle “Viola Spaces for Two”, and the remarkable “Groteskas” by A. Rekašius – a rarely performed gem of Lithuanian music, dedicated to the legendary violists P. Radzevičius and D. Katkus.
